Tree of Lights
Despite the chilly evening drizzle, families and friends gathered at Brookside Gardens on December 10th to remember and celebrate the lives of their deceased loved ones. Groups gathered around the darkened tree to the notes of Rob Vetter's trumpet. Arnold Kohn, Montgomery Hospice Board chairman, welcomed all visitors, and Philip Rider, Montgomery Hospice Chaplain, shared an invocation. The families of Marco Martinez and Wallace Piotroski lit the tree, assisted by Richard Pettit, Montgomery Hospice Foundation chairman. The large tree sparkled with lights, each one representing a beloved family member or friend. The remembrances continued indoors to the beautiful music of harpist Linda King. All were treated to hot cider and cookies served by the staff and volunteers of Montgomery Hospice.
The families really appreciated the warm scarves provided by volunteers from the Kaiser Permanente Shady Grove Medical Center. Special thanks to Brookside Gardens and the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission for hosting this beautiful ceremony again this year, and allowing us to visit the "Garden of Lights." Thank you as well to all who participated and purchased a memorial light.
